Speirs on target at Spring Meeting

On another glorious day for golf which saw participation in the Spring Meeting up 10% on last year (152 v 138) it was Scott Speirs who came out on top with a superb nett 64 propelled by 3 gross birdies at 6, 10 and 18. He also recovered superbly from a wee wobble at Fereneze's very own Amen Corner with back to back 6's at 14 & 15. Two halves of 41 added up to 82 for nett 64. That's Scott's best counting score by 4 shots beating his previous best 86 from last July.

Muir McCluskey Jnr took sole 2nd 2 shots behind Scott. Halves of 43 and 40 with nothing worse than nett bogey. Like Scott he dropped some shots at 14 but finished strongly being level par for the last 4 holes with a birdie at 17 for good measure. That's also Muir's best score by 4 going back to the Spring Meeting last year.

Three players tied on nett 67, Fereneze legend Alan Gorrie rolled back the years with a gross 73 which included birdies at 9 & 12. I reckon Alan could break his age you know, keeping an eye out for that one at some point. Craig Shaw continued his positive start to the season with a gross 77 which included 3 consecutive 3s at 14, 15 & 16. Eddie Byrne is another who's started the season well and he completes the trio who finished -4, his score built on a fast start with birdies at 2 and 3. Alan pipped Craig to third courtesy of the last 2 holes and Craig over Eddie with the BIH.

Alan, Muir and Scott pick up 1st place sweep money in the classes. There were 5 2s in both 1st and 2nd class with the same pay out in both and only 2 in 3rd class with each player picking up £21.50 for each.

Best scratch score of the day was Josh Beatt, who offset 2 double bogies and 2 bogies with 6 birdies in halves of 39 and 32 for a level total. Michael Hart Jnr and Stuart Dickson both finished with 72.

Given we're only 2 events into the season there's going to be some volatility and those finishing in the top 5 unsurprisingly are near the top of the standings. Scott Speirs followed up a good finish this week with victory and 200 points so jumps from 17th to 1st. Matt Carroll maintains second spot after his 2nd place finish last week and a 24th place finish this week. Muir McCluskey Jnr jumps from 38th to 3rd. Other significant movers were Craig Shaw from 46th to 7th and Alan Gorrie into 13th with his first points allocation of 150.

Course Analytics

the 3rd and 15th played to form being the 2 toughest holes on the course. The amount of 2s being much less than normal tells me that they must have been playing tough and the 2nd, 4th and 14th were in the top 6 hardest holes today. 16 and 11 were the 2 easiest holes on the course.

In other news.....Philip Mackay was telling me via email that he lost his tee shot at 14 way left and popped in the provisional for a par....the scorecard has no pictures as they say!
